Are you at the helm of an owner-led business, feeling like you’re missing a vital component? This blog post might just hold the answers you’ve been seeking.

I often hand over a particular paper to every new client. The reason is simple: If they aren’t embodying the level of integrity necessary to achieve the performance they’re aiming for, then even the most meticulously crafted strategies and visions will fall flat.

We’re past the point of questioning the efficacy of our methodologies. Our coaching and consulting services at Culture to Cash are proven to be effective. However, the one variable that can dramatically influence outcomes is the integrity exhibited by the client, their employees, and the company as a whole. This is something that’s outside our domain of control.

Deciphering Integrity

Now, one might wonder, what do I mean by integrity? Do I want my clients to adhere to moral and ethical standards? Absolutely. But more than that, I desire for them to operate with unwavering integrity.

During an enlightening interview between Karen Christensen and Michael Jensen on the topic of integrity, the distinctions between morality, ethics, and integrity were eloquently elaborated upon. While morality reflects society’s perceptions of right and wrong, and ethics represents a set of normative values for group members, integrity stands apart. Unlike morality and ethics, which operate on the spectrum of good vs. bad, integrity simply exists, much like gravity.

This brings us to an essential question: if integrity is inherently positive, why isn’t it at the core of everything that we, our teams, and our companies do?

Defining Integrity

In my view, integrity is straightforward: Do what you promise. Michael Jensen, however, offers a more nuanced definition. When asked about what it means for a person to embody integrity, he responded:

“An individual is whole and complete when their word is whole and complete, and their word is whole and complete when they honor their word. This can be achieved in two ways: either by keeping one’s promise, promptly, or, if one realizes they can’t uphold their word, they must promptly inform all involved parties and remedy any inconvenience caused. In doing so, even if one hasn’t kept their word, they’ve still honored it and retained their integrity.”

This perspective is paramount. If agreements aren’t upheld, how can any entity hope to succeed?

Integrity as a Pillar of Success

Integrity underpins workability, and without it, the efficiency of any system or organization deteriorates. Consequently, integrity becomes indispensable for optimal performance.

As the leader of an owner-led business, you must recognize that your income, reputation, and overall well-being hinge on you and your team’s adherence to integrity. If integrity is compromised, consider the implications: Will customers remain loyal? How will the company be perceived in the marketplace? Who will wish to collaborate?

Furthermore, consider the internal dynamics: How long before employees become disillusioned and leave? How will you attract top talent?

Our success, or the lack thereof, is directly tied to our integrity quotient. Performance and integrity are inextricably linked.

I encourage you to delve into the paper I’ve mentioned. Often, the aspirations we have for our companies are within reach; we just need to elevate our operations to the necessary level.
